Call of Duty World at War

Friday, November 14th, 2008

I’ve played through a few of the single player chapters at this point. I’ve got big issues with this game. My biggest is that I feel like I’m a spectator being dragged along, only asked to push a few buttons to advance to the next segment. You’ve always got someone barking orders at you, and if you don’t comply, he just repeats them….again and again. You get the impression that NOTHING you do outside of that objective matters.

But hey, I don’t want to be all negative. I enjoyed some of the sniping in the russian section, and cooking people with the flame thrower is great fun. And I’ve yet to gain access to the zombie mode. I can imagine the conversation regarding this mode… ‘hey guys, everyone will want to play this part of our game, we should probably force them to play our scripted nonsense first…’

I don’t know if I’ll make it all the way… this game has a lot of competition for my time, and it’s not doing much to endear itself to me. That said, if you are enjoying it, that’s all that counts. We don’t all have to like the same games. That would actually be very bad.

Lots of Zombies to Shoot

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

I beat Call of Duty World at War’s SP campaign. Or should I say cam-pain. Luckily the zombie mode it unlocks seems like it will be worth it. I’ve yet to try it co-op but my first go with it was great fun.

But that’s small news compared to the fact that Left 4 Dead is now out. I’ve only played through the entire No Mercy campaign so far. What an ending! This will surely hold my interest for a while… I wonder how many Left 4 Dead comics I can create? ;)

Modern Warfare 2 SP

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

I beat the single player portion of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 last night on the 360. There were a couple of thrilling moments, but for the most part it was pretty average… exactly what I would expect from a Call of Duty game. I don’t get excited about these heavily scripted games; half the time I felt that my actions really had little effect on what was happening. There was no real reason to take things easy or methodically; I knew that if I was going to get ambushed, it was going to happen no matter what I did.

I’m mainly interested in the Spec Ops mode, so hopefully that redeems it.

And why do these games think it’s so fun to have the AI throw grenades at you every 3 seconds?
